Who was Barabbas?
Barabbas was a criminal who was about to be executed (crucified) by the Roman soldiers for his many crimes. He was well-known in the area for what he had done.
Was he killed?
There was a tradition every year for the Roman governor to release one prisoner. The crowd could choose who they wanted to be released. Pilate, who was governor at the time, let the crowd choose between Barabbas and Jesus!
Barabbas was guilty of many crimes, but Jesus was innocent. Which one do you think the crowd chose to be released? They chose Barabbas to be released, and they shouted for Jesus to be killed instead!
Barabbas should have been executed, but he wasn’t! He was able to have a new, free life when he should have been punished. Jesus literally died in his place.
New life
That is what Jesus did for us too! In the same way that he took Barabbas’ place on the cross and let him live, he also took our place – because we deserve to be punished for the things we do and think that are wrong. Instead, we can have a new, free life when we trust in Jesus.
