Who was Pilate?
When Jesus was arrested, he was sent to Pontius Pilate. Pilate was the Roman governor at the time and famously handled Jesus’ trial. He listened to the charges against him, and asked Jesus questions to try and see if he was a guilty man.
Those who arrested him didn’t like that Jesus was claiming to be God or ‘King of the Jews’. So Pilate asked him, “Are you king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
What did Pilate decide?
Pilate couldn’t see that Jesus had done anything wrong. He hadn’t broken any laws or hurt anybody. All he had done was love people and upset some people by saying he was God. He said, “I find him innocent. He doesn’t deserve to die.”
But Pilate wanted to please the crowd, so he let them decide Jesus’ fate (thinking they would just let him go!) But they didn’t. They called out for Jesus to be killed. He was afraid of going against the crowd, so he washed his hands in front of the crowd and said “He’s your responsibility now!”
Then he handed Jesus over to be killed – even though he found him innocent.
