What is Myrrh?
Myrrh was used to embalm a dead body, but it was one of the gifts the wise men gave to Jesus. A very odd gift for a little boy!
They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11, The Bible.
Why did they give him something for dead bodies?
Jesus was born to die, and this gift was given to show how important his death would be. That’s why he came into the world in the first place, and that’s why we celebrate Christmas! The God who created everything – including you and me – became one of us and chose to die for us.
How did he die?
When he was 33, he was executed on a cross (even though he did nothing wrong). That was always God’s plan. Jesus took all the punishment on himself that we deserve for all the wrong in our lives, and so he died in our place!
Why does that matter now?
He is alive! He didn’t stay dead, his power brought him back to life and he wants to be friends with us today. How amazing that we can be friends with the King who created everything! He asks us to believe and follow him, and then he will give us life that lasts forever.
