Jesus was born in a smelly, dirty stable and was put in a manger to sleep (where animals ate from!)
And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. Luke 2:6-7, The Bible.
Why a manger?
Jesus was King, so he could have been born in a palace, or at least in someone’s house! But right from the beginning of his life he had nothing, and he spent a lot of his life without a home.
He was born somewhere messy and lowly because the world was messy! And he was going to get stuck in and fix it.
Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Philippians 2:6-8, The Bible.
